Dear Senator Todd Young,
With the SAVE Act now being debated in the U.S. Senate, I urge you to vote against this anti-democratic measure, as it will nullify the voter registration status of millions of women who dropped their maiden name, took a partner’s last name, married more than once, or hyphenated their last name--and bar millions of Americans from lawfully voting who lack a passport and physical birth certificate--and make it, in general, more difficult to both register and vote for many millions of citizens. In addition, in proposing banning universal mail-in voting in various states, legitimate voting will be greatly diminished. And there are other burdens to registering and voting being forwarded by Republicans creating and pushing this unnecessary measure.
Everyone knows that such unjust barriers have not been necessary anytime in the past for there to have been legitimate and accurate election results. The claim of significant or widespread voter fraud has been repeatedly debunked by various investigative sources, including by the conservative Heritage Foundation, whose data analysis over a 5-decade period from 1982 to 2020 indicated 1,334 instances of voter fraud GENERALLY, with just 10 implicating non-citizens! This out of hundreds of million of votes! (And this is documentation of instances of registration rather than verification of actual votes cast by non-citizens--which would be even fewer.).
Further, the Bipartisan Policy Center analyzed a more recent database of fraud cases compiled by the conservative Heritage Foundation for 1999 to 2023 and found only 77 instances of non-citizen voting during that quarter-century period .
You and your party, Senator Young, are carrying on an anti-democratic and anti-Democratic tactic. The claim or concern of voting by non-citizens is a ruse, a non-existent problem; and the proposed broad remedy is unconstitutional, for voting is a fundamental right, to which Republicans are putting multiple barriers that will exclude many, many Americans from lawfully voting--NOT an imaginary large group of non-citizens.
Further, a Strict Scrutiny of this fundamental right matter shows that any potential voting fraud is an immensely far lesser problem than the problem this partisan remedy, for it creates in the process large-scale exclusion of lawful voters--an out and out voter suppression/disenfranchisement measure that is unconstitutional.
This wholly Republican measure comes only as a result of Trump's false and deceitful claim of the 2020 election being rigged. And you, Senator, knew that was not true when, in 2024, you said you would not vote for Trump for president. Well, you are now doing his nefarious bidding. So, again, I strongly ask you to vote against this anti-democratic bill AND FOR Civic and Constitutional integrity.
Thank you,
Douglas Paprocki
